During the simulation he used a cloaking device to successfully get his crew out of a tough battle with the romulans. Although he did beat the simulation in a record time, the strict regulations against the use of cloaking devices lead to an eventual reprimand. It is believed the idea may have come from his readings on Capt James T Kirk during his time at the academy.
